Chile to ban imports from occupied territories and back arms embargo

Chilean President Gabriel Boric has pledged to increase pressure on Israel, introducing a bill to ban imports from occupied territories and supporting Spain’s arms embargo efforts.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Chilean President Gabriel Boric has pledged to intensify pressure on Israel over its ongoing war in Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of over 54,400 Palestinians, most of them women and children, since October 2023.

During a three-hour speech before Congress in Valparaiso, Boric announced plans to introduce a bill banning imports from illegally occupied territories. He also expressed support for Spain’s efforts to impose an arms embargo on Israel.

Boric has been a vocal critic of Israel’s actions. Last week, the Chilean government decided to withdraw all military, defense, and air force attachés from Tel Aviv in protest against the war in Gaza.

A statement from Chile’s Foreign Ministry on May 28 cited the “extremely serious humanitarian situation” faced by Palestinians in Gaza as the reason for the decision.

Since October 7, 2023, at least 54,418 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, while another 124,190 have been injured in Israeli military operations.

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Minister of Military Affairs Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its military campaign in Gaza.
